Amid a global pandemic, we still need to move forward, learn, and create. How can Design Thinking bring you tools to develop your project, idea, or thesis?
Design thinking is a process for creative problem finding, -framing, and -solving. It’s a way of working that is human-centered at its core. Founded and developed by David Kelley at the Institute of Design at Stanford University (the d.school), design thinking encourages practitioners to focus on the people they’re creating for, which leads to better products, services, and ways of working.
In these two fast-paced, hands-on sessions, media cluster students will engage with the design thinking process and its methods. The first session begins with an immersive design challenge to introduce the full cycle of the process: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test.
Part 1: Thursday October 15, 4-5pm
In the first session, students will learn not only the tools of design thinking but also the value of problem-framing. When focusing on efficiency, creative problem-solving leads to incremental improvements. When focusing on transformation, creative problem-finding can lead to entirely new solutions.
Part 2: Tuesday October 20, 4-5pm
In the second session, we’ll focus on the values and tools of rough and rapid prototyping. You want to get your ideas into the world as quickly as you can, to get feedback when a) it doesn’t cost much to consider and b) you’re more likely to listen to it. The earlier you test your prototype, the faster you’ll get feedback and be able to incorporate it. This requires risk-taking and creative confidence, the self-eðcacy students need to be entrepreneurial.
About Justin Ferrell, Institute of Design at Stanford
An experienced educator and creative leader specializing in organizational culture, Justin has led innovation engagements for Global 500 and other prominent organizations including Boehringer Ingelheim, Colgate-Palmolive, Deutsche Telekom, Dow Jones, Facebook, Fidelity Investments, Google, Humana, HP, Merck, NPR, Nokia, PepsiCo, SAP, The Aspen Institute, The New York Times, The United Nations, the U.S. Department of State and the World Economic Forum.
He also teaches executives at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and globally with Duke Corporate Education, and has worked with executive programs at Aalto University (Finland), EGADE Business School (Mexico) and Massey University (New Zealand).
Justin is the founder of the professional fellowship program at the Institute of Design at Stanford University (the d.school), where he teaches graduate courses in design thinking and organization design.
Prior to joining Stanford, Justin was a career journalist specializing in organizational change and creative culture. He is the former director of digital, mobile & new product design at The Washington Post, where he designed the investigative series “Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency,” winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting, as well as four other Pulitzer finalists. Justin has spoken on creative culture in many venues, from the Norwegian Research Council in Oslo; to the U.S. Embassy in Dublin; to the World Business Forum in Monterrey, Mexico; to Education City in Doha, Qatar.

- You are signing up for both sessions in the series, the sessions are held at 4PM Thursday October 15 and Tuesday October 20.
- The sessions are free to attend for all students in the Media Cluster.
- The registration is binding. If you are unable to attend the sessions, it is important to let us know in advance. You can make a cancellation up to 24 hours prior to the events. Once this deadline has passed you will be invoiced a cancellation fee for not attending.
