Media City Bergen, et ledende internasjonalt miljø for medie- og teknologiinnovasjon, kunngjorde i dag at Bellingcat er tildelt prisen som er opprettet til minne om Anne Jacobsen. Prisen skal styrke arbeidet for en opplyst offentlig samtale. Ifølge juryen for Anne Jacobsens Minnepris ble Bellingcat tildelt prisen for sin imponerende innsats for transparent og pålitelig journalistikk. Dette er andre gang prisen deles ut. Kjersti Løken Stavrum fra Stiftelsen Tinius leder juryen.
Bellingcat er et anerkjent open-source kollektiv for gravejournalistisk, grunnlagt i 2014 av Eliot Higgins. Gruppen har fått internasjonal oppmerksomhet for sin banebrytende gravejournalistikk. Bellingcat bruker avanserte open-source teknikker for å avdekke skjulte sannheter og verifisere informasjon.
Juryen roser Bellingcats nyskapende journalistiske virksomhet: «Bellingcat representerer fremtiden for gravejournalistikk. Ved banebrytende teknologi har de funnet svar på viktige spørsmål og dessuten fremmet en kultur for samarbeid og åpenhet. Deres faktabaserte journalistikk og transparens har omdefinert medielandskapet. Bellingcat har rett og slett hevet listen for hva man kan forvente fra verdensledende gravejournalistikk. I kampen mot løgn og usannheter er det inspirerende at Bellingcat finnes. Vi er stolte over å kunne hedre deres arbeid.»
Juryen fremhever spesielt Bellingcats Ukraina-database som ble etablert allerede den første dagen av den russiske invasjonen. Ambisjonen bak databasen er å samle fakta om krigsforbrytelser som kan legges frem som bevis for en domstol.
Juryen bemerker også at Bellingcat har kastet lys over viktige spørsmål som nedskytingen av Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 og forgiftningen av den tidligere russiske spionen Sergei Skripal i tillegg til hendelser i den syriske borgerkrigen, blant annet.
Grunnleggeren av Bellingcat, Eliot Higgins, er stolt over å få prisen:
«Jeg er utrolig beæret og ydmyk over å høre at Bellingcat har blitt valgt til å motta årets Anne Jacobsens minnepris. Denne prestisjetunge anerkjennelsen er et prov på den utrettelige innsatsen vårt team og internasjonale miljø legger ned for å videreutvikle open-source etterforskning og fremme åpenhet og ansvarlighet over hele verden.»
Prisen deles ut til minne om Anne Jacobsen, tidligere daglig leder av Media City Bergen.
Det er andre gang prisen deles ut. I 2022 ble Maldita.es fra Spania tildelt prisen for faktasjekkingsinitiativet #UkraineFacts.
Prisen ble stiftet for å hedre minnet om Anne Jacobsen, som brått gikk bort i januar 2022. Anne Jacobsen var sterkt overbevist om nødvendigheten av å bekjempe desinformasjon. Prisen ble muliggjort av flere bedrifter, organisasjoner og enkeltpersoner tilknyttet Media City Bergen og Anne Jacobsen.
«Å motta Anne Jacobsens minnepris er ikke bare en validering av Bellingcats arbeid, men også en mulighet for oss til å fremheve viktigheten av å styrke borgerjournalister og aktivister med å tilgjengeliggjøre innovative verktøy og teknikker som gjør dem i stand til å avdekke sannheten», skriver Higgins og fortsetter:
«Anne Jacobsen var en banebryter i journalistikkens verden, og arven hennes lever videre gjennom denne prisen som hyller innovasjon og engasjement innen feltet. Jeg er virkelig takknemlig for denne anerkjennelsen og vil sørge for at Bellingcat fortsetter å opprettholde verdiene og prinsippene som Anne personifiserte gjennom sin karriere.»
Vinneren får 100.000 norske kroner. Den offisielle prisutdelingen finner sted under Media City Bergens Future Week-konferanse 8. juni. Bellingcats COO, Dessi Damianova, vil ta imot prisen på vegne av organisasjonen. Tidligere under Future Week, 6. juni, vil to foredragsholdere tilknyttet Bellingcat presentere arbeidet sitt. Olga Lubiv, en etterforsker fra Justice & Accountability Unit, vil snakke om hvordan Bellingcat sporer krigsforbrytelser i Ukraina, og journalisten Wim Zwijnenburg vil snakke om hvordan open-source verktøy kan styrke journalister og lokalsamfunn ved å spore miljøkriminalitet og bygge ansvarlighet.

Bellingcat wins Anne Jacobsen’s Memorial Award
“Bellingcat is immensely inspiring in a world often clouded by falsehoods and deception. We proudly recognize their unwavering pursuit of truth”, writes the jury.
Media City Bergen, a leading international hub for media and technology innovation, announced today that it has awarded Bellingcat the prize instituted in memory of Anne Jacobsen, to honor work that empowers a fact-based society. According to the jury of Anne Jacobsen’s Memorial Award, Bellingcat was awarded the prize due to their unwavering commitment to transparent and reliable journalism. It is the second time the award has been handed out. Kjersti Løken Stavrum from the Tinius Trust led the jury.
Bellingcat is a renowned open-source investigative journalism collective founded in 2014 by Eliot Higgins. The group has garnered international acclaim for its groundbreaking investigative journalism, which utilizes cutting-edge open-source techniques to uncover hidden truths and verify information. The organization has played a crucial role in exposing numerous high-profile incidents and bringing them to the global public's attention.
The jury praised Bellingcat's innovative approach to journalism: “Bellingcat represents the future of investigative journalism, harnessing cutting-edge technology to expose the truth and fostering a culture of collaboration and openness. Their fact-based reporting and commitment to transparency have redefined the media landscap. Bellingcat has, in essence, expanded the scope of what can be the expected output of world-class investigative journalism. Bellingcat is immensely inspiring in a world often clouded by falsehoods and deception. We proudly recognize their unwavering pursuit of truth.”
The jury particularly highlights Bellingcat’s Ukraine database. Starting the collection of incidents resulting in potential civilian harm the very first day of the Russian invasion, the ambition is to provide digital evidence of war crimes that can hold up in court.
The jury also notes that the organization has consistently demonstrated its ability to hold powerful entities accountable, shedding light on important issues such as the Syrian civil war, the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 and the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal, among many others.
The founder of Bellingcat, Eliot Higgins, is proud to receive the award:

The award is handed out in memory of Anne Jacobsen, former CEO of Media City Bergen.
It is the second time the award is handed out. In 2022 Maldita.es from Spain was awarded the prize for the fact-checking initiative #UkraineFacts.
The award was instituted to honor the memory of Anne Jacobsen, who suddenly passed away in January 2022. Anne Jacobsen firmly believed in the need to fight disinformation. The award was made possible by several companies, organizations and individuals connected to Media City Bergen and Anne Jacobsen.
“Receiving the Anne Jacobsen's Memorial Award is not only a validation of Bellingcat's work, but also an opportunity for us to highlight the importance of empowering citizen journalists and activists through accessible and innovative tools and techniques that enable them to uncover the truth”, writes Higgins, and continues:
“Anne Jacobsen was a trailblazer in the world of journalism, and her legacy lives on through this award that celebrates innovation and dedication within the field. I am truly grateful for this recognition and will ensure that Bellingcat continues to uphold the values and principles that Anne embodied throughout her career.”
The winner is awarded 100,000 Norwegian kroner. The official award ceremony will take place during Media City Bergen’s Future Week conference on the 8th of June. Bellingcat’s COO, Dessi Damianova, will accept the award on behalf of the organization. Earlier during the conference, on June 6th, two speakers affiliated with Bellingcat will present their work. Olga Lubiv, an investigator from the Justice & Accountability Unit, will talk about how Bellingcat tracks war crimes in Ukraine, and the journalist Wim Zwijnenburg will speak about how open-source tools can empower journalists and communities by tracking environmental crimes and building accountability.
